Every plant has the same three documents: a PPE policy, a set of restricted areas, and a housekeeping standard. And every plant has the same gap — the distance between what those documents say and what the floor does at hour six of the night shift. Audits sample that gap a few hours a quarter. The cameras over the lines see it continuously.
PPE: from spot checks to continuous verification
Manual PPE monitoring is sampling, and everyone on the floor knows when the sampler is present. Continuous verification inverts the dynamic: the rule — “flag anyone on the floor without required PPE — notify the shift supervisor after two events” — runs identically at 2 p.m. and 2 a.m., and per-area compliance trends replace anecdotes in the EHS review. Machine cells and energized areas: deterministic, not vigilant
Zone incursions are low-frequency, high-severity — the profile human vigilance handles worst. A camera-enforced boundary never gets bored: entries into machine cells escalate immediately, staging-area drift merely notifies, and zones follow schedules — enforced during blasting windows or after dark, relaxed under an active permit-to-work. Every incursion becomes a sealed, timestamped record, which is precisely the evidence an investigator or regulator asks for and almost no plant can currently produce. Housekeeping and 5S: the standard between the audits
5S scores decay the day after the audit because nothing measures the days between. Camera-based housekeeping rules — blocked aisles, spills, material out of place — flag conditions within minutes of them forming and route the alert to the area owner on shift, not a queue. The sequence that works
Plants that succeed with this run the same sequence: pick the two lines or cells with the worst incident history, enforce PPE and zone rules there first, and add housekeeping once the alert routing has bedded in. Pilots of 10–50 cameras deploy in days because the rules are written in plain English from policies that already exist — no training data, no annotation project, no per-site model tuning.
The plant already paid for the policies and the cameras. Enforcement is the missing third piece — and it is the cheapest of the three.
